Effects of music synchronization and musical preferences on physiological response during physical exercise: a quasi-experimental study

Abstract

Objective: To compare the physiological response of the cardiorespiratory system during two exercise sessions; one synchronized to music, and the other led by an instructor while listening to music of personal preference. Methodology: A quasi-experimental crossover study was carried out with 13 individuals (7 men, mean age 23.7 years). The participants performed two exercise sessions: one with musical synchronization and the other not synchronized, but listening to the music of personal preference, with an interval of 72 hours between sessions. Heart rate (HR), perceived exertion (PE), internal training load (ITL) and heart rate variability (HRV) were evaluated during the sessions. Results: During the synchronized session, significantly lower mean HR and peak HR (Δ-5.5% and Δ-5.2%, respectively) and lower peak PE (Δ-9.9%) were observed compared to the non-synchronized session. The ICD was also lower (Δ-10%) in the synchronized exercise. No significant differences were found in HRV between sessions. Variations in HR and EP were determined by temporal changes during the sessions. Only changes in HR were determined by the musical synchronization of the exercises. Conclusions: In the sample studied, musically synchronized exercise resulted in lower perceived cardiovascular intensity, without variations on autonomic regulation.
