Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study a short video footage of the famous German series Deutschland 83 from the perspective of audiovisual translation. In hardly twelve seconds a huge number of cultural references from the East and West blocks of Germany during the Cold War period are introduced, and there is a big divergence between the image and the dialogues; all these challenges have been addressed by the Spanish, French and Italian audiovisual translators through different translation strategies, and we present them from a teaching approach, as a good exercise for the audiovisual translation training.
