Abstract

In order to improve the effectiveness of quality assurance systems in higher education, systems must gather information from the student's perspective, especially regarding satisfaction with college life, a concept linked to both services and resources. Hence, it is necessary to identify the variables that students prize most highly and to use these variables to find the key indicators. This paper aims to contribute to the development of an internal quality assurance system by pinpointing the key indicators of the quality of college life from the student's point of view. Student satisfaction is used to measure the quality of college life (QCL) based on the model proposed by Sirgy, Grezeskowiak and Rahtz (2007). The measurement was tested empirically in the 2010-2011 academic year at the University of Castilla-La Mancha School of Social Sciences in Talavera de la Reina, where online surveys were administered to business administration students. The results were tabulated and a structural equation model was created to identify the factors that most heavily influence student satisfaction as regards resources and facilities, teaching and social life. The findings show that both academic and social aspects influence student satisfaction. Teaching and academic reputation are the most influential academic variables, while athletic activities and international programmes are the social aspects with the highest impact on student satisfaction. Hence, it can be stated that social and academic aspects must be taken into equal account in the development of quality assurance programs in higher education.
