This paper examines several issues that have concerned economists and auditors a different historical moments. We describe information provided by the financial statements in times of inflation, and specifically if at that juncture, the accounting equity information shows us a true and faithful image of the merchant or businessman. Two experts assessed that question: the Franciscan fray Luca Paccioli (1445-1517), mathematician, accountant, economist, professor at the universities of Florence, Pisa and Perugia, mathematics adviser at the Milanese court of Ludovico Sforza and friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Another expert, Eugen Schmalenbarch (1873-1955) professor of Business Administration at the University of Cologne, promoter of the integration of Business Schools in German university institutions, designed an accounting model, “Goldmarkbilanz” (Balance in gold marks) which would allow to present in homogeneous values the Balance Sheets and Income Statements of companies during the inflation in Weimar Republic. © 2023, Asociacion Veritas-Estudios sobre historia, derecho e instituciones.
