Abstract

The restructuring of rural economies gives women a key role in regional development by means of activities related to rural tourism. There persists, however, a gender gap in labour market participation. The objective of this research is the analysis of working conditions and wages in rural tourism as compared with predominantly urban areas in Spain. This contributes to analyzing the challenges of social and territorial cohesion from a gender perspective. The results show that women in predominantly rural areas work under worse conditions and face a greater gender pay gap.
