Abstract

Research on the language of tourism has been gradually taking shape in Spanish educational contexts, especially in tertiary levels. This runs parallel to the incorporation of an ever-increasing number of English words in the Touristic discourse, resulting in high levels of lexical interference. The goal of this paper is to see the extent to which this presence of the English language can be applied to the teaching of Spanish for Tourism. To this aim, a corpus containing prototypical conversations has been used. The data show many borrowings and lexical calques, most of which are already part of the Spanish language in the industry. Thus, and by means of an Opensim virtual world, some activities have been designed to facilitate the learning of this lexis through the medium of English. The ultimate end of this research is to raise awareness of the English presence in the students of Spanish as a second language, and provide them with skills that might enhance their linguistic production levels.
