Abstract

The objective of this study is to characterize student opinion about the advantages and weaknesses of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) when compared to other teaching models by using a socio-educational context. A qualitative descriptive method was applied to a sample of Spanish social education university students. The data collected consisted of a content analysis of edublogs generated by each student surveyed. The results show the proportion of university students that belong to a positive feature of this new teaching mode: free (16.67%), brings benefits to most in need (13.61%), scheduling flexibility (10.88%), online education (9.52%), and the great diversity of courses offered by MOOC platforms (8.84%). It is concluded that the main advantage of MOOC courses is that they are free and that their main disadvantages are the scarcity of tutoring systems and the lack of evaluation in other teaching models. © 2020, Formacion Universitaria.
