Abstract

This article analyses the presence of American family sitcoms in children's and youth television programming on Spanish broadcasting networks during the golden age of analog commercial television (1990-2005). Furthermore, the ratings these serials scored upon release will be assessed, as well as what has abided in viewers' memories of those who were viewers at the time. It was found that there is an idealization, by those viewers, of both the contents and the moment in which they watched them, that can influence the cultivation effect. American family sitcoms are seen as a one-of-a-kind serial because of its ability to create a reality which is perceived as different from actual life, but that is easily accepted and assimilated as good. The effect of nostalgia gives rise - within time - to an uncritical and positive view of the television programmes in question. © 2022 Universidad Complutense de Madrid. All rights reserved.
