Abstract

The aim of the article is to carry out a bibliographical analysis on the importance of the media in anti-feminist backlashes. Margaret Mead demonstrates the role of culture and education in the acquisition of genders roles by men and women. Kate Millett, in dissecting the processes by which patriarchy is perpetuated, concluded that a kind of «internal colonization» is operating. Advertising play a fundamental role in this network, showing itself to be an instrument for the dissemination and legitimization of social norms, roles and gender stereotypes. Because of these possibilities, it is interesting to examine the role that advertising plays in anti-feminist reactions. We will focus on two moments in which this link becomes evident: the backlash of the 1950s and the backlash of the 1980s. © 2020 Universitat Jaume I. All rights reserved.
