Abstract

In this paper, we present a distributed multi-agent architecture, Agrobots architecture, for dynamic agriculture robot fleet coordination as well as a software package, Agrobots-SIM, developed for efficient modelling and simulation of dynamic multi-robot task allocation and vehicle routing problem in agriculture robot (agrobot) fleets. In contrast to other multi-robot applications, an agrobot fleet may be composed of specialized robots for a certain task and of generic robots requiring a specific detachable tool (implement) for different tasks. The proposed package extends the existing package Patrolling_SIM [15] made for multi-robot patrolling and accommodates for dynamic multi-robot task allocation and vehicle routing problem considering robot battery autonomy as well as contingencies by dynamic updates during simulation of the data related with environment, tasks, and robots. Moreover, Agrobots-SIM accommodates different inter-robot communication strategies to simulate real-world communication conditions. The developed package is implemented in the Robot Operating System with distributed controllers that allow both off-line and on-line distributed control. We show the functioning of the simulator in several use-case experiments. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Quality index

Bibliometric impact. Analysis of the contribution and dissemination channel

The work has been published in the journal Communications In Computer And Information Science, Q4 Agency Scopus (SJR), its regional focus and specialization in Computer Science (Miscellaneous), give it significant recognition in a specific niche of scientific knowledge at an international level.

From a relative perspective, and based on the normalized impact indicator calculated from the Field Citation Ratio (FCR) of the Dimensions source, it yields a value of: 1.88, which indicates that, compared to works in the same discipline and in the same year of publication, it ranks as a work cited above average. (source consulted: Dimensions Jun 2025)

Specifically, and according to different indexing agencies, this work has accumulated citations as of 2025-06-08, the following number of citations:

  • Scopus: 3
  • OpenCitations: 1

Impact and social visibility

From the perspective of influence or social adoption, and based on metrics associated with mentions and interactions provided by agencies specializing in calculating the so-called "Alternative or Social Metrics," we can highlight as of 2025-06-08:

  • The use of this contribution in bookmarks, code forks, additions to favorite lists for recurrent reading, as well as general views, indicates that someone is using the publication as a basis for their current work. This may be a notable indicator of future more formal and academic citations. This claim is supported by the result of the "Capture" indicator, which yields a total of: 1 (PlumX).
